I've learned a lot from opportunities I have been given through the University Honors Program; here is a little bit about what I learned:
JOUR 2050: La Habana, Cuba.
Spring semester of 2017, I had the opportunity to take an honors seminar with a study tour component to Havana, Cuba. In the class, we learned about Cuban culture, history, and politics by reading and discussing the book, “The Other Side of Paradise” by Julia Cooke. We even had the opportunity to meet the author via video chat and learn more about her career and experiences in Havana. Despite the background we built during the semester, nothing could have prepared us for the curious adventure that is a week in Havana. Every element of Cuba – the hotel industry and their tendency to fill hotels by nationalities, the Fidel Castro propaganda at every corner despite his death, the somewhat biased perspective of Cubans on their own history – was simultaneously peculiar and intriguing. While touring, we were encouraged to choose a concentration and combine our knowledge of journalism, photo-journalism, and travel writing to display our experience. I was most captivated by the art; it was beautiful and held strong messages about freedom and capitalism.
If you click the button below, you will be taken to my final project for the class. It best showcases my experience in Cuba, as well as what I discovered about art and its significance in Cuba as I researched the area. I hope you can gain something from it.
